Chapter 3 - The Hound’s Scent

Three levels above the flooded sewer, Viper spat a red string of saliva onto the polished hood of an abandoned sedan. His nose was broken in two places, swollen and purple, but the pain was distant, swallowed whole by a cold, white-hot fury. He stood beside a towering man clad in unmarked matte-black tactical gear—Captain Gabriel, the commander of Sterling Security's elite extraction unit.

"The thermal signatures are scrambled down there," Gabriel said, staring into the tactical monitor mounted on his forearm. "The storm runoff creates too much thermal noise. We lost their visual."

"They aren't invisible," Viper growled, his hand clutching his switchblade so hard his knuckles turned white. "The kid is smart, but he’s arrogant. He thinks he’s playing a video game. He’s heading for the old subway vaults under Sector 4."

"How do you know that?" Gabriel asked, turning his helmeted head toward the scarred street fighter.

Viper grinned, a twisted display of blood-stained teeth. "Because that’s where his mother hid the secondary server back in '21. He thinks he can upload the drive’s contents to an open satellite uplink and broadcast Vance’s entire ledger to every news outlet on the continent."

Gabriel clicked his radio headset. "Team Bravo, deploy the acoustic sensors down shaft C. If a rat twitches in those sewers, I want to know its heartbeat. Team Charlie, head to the Sector 4 subway junction and set up a hard perimeter. Shoot to disable the boy, execute the female operative on sight."

Down in the black waters of the sewer, Sarah and Leo pushed forward, the water rising to their waists. The claustrophobic tunnel echoed with the distant, rhythmic pinging of acoustic sonar—a haunting sound that vibrated directly through their bones.

"They dropped sonar pingers," Sarah whispered, pulling Leo behind a mossy support pillar. "Every sound we make is being mapped in three dimensions."

Leo remained still, his breathing slow and controlled. He pulled a small, silver sphere from his hoodie pocket—a remnant from his escape from the Sterling research lab. "They use broad-spectrum acoustic frequencies. High pitch, high pulse."

"What are you doing?" Sarah asked as Leo began twisting the core of the sphere.

"Giving them something else to listen to," he replied.

He dropped the device into the water. Two seconds later, the sphere released a intense, localized shockwave that tore through the water with the sound of a roaring jet engine. The acoustic feedback surged up through the sewer pipes, detonating the ear-pieces of every mercenary wearing tactical headsets on the levels above. Shrieks of pain echoed through the vents as Gabriel’s men fell to their knees, clutching their bleeding ears.

"Move!" Sarah barked, seizing the distraction. They bolted through the cascading water, tearing into a side corridor that sloped upward toward the long-abandoned subway tracks.
