Chapter 4 - Ghost Station

The light of the moon barely penetrated the iron grates of the abandoned subway terminal. Dust slept on the silent rails like gray snow, undisturbed for decades. Broken turnstiles, faded vintage posters, and rusted train cars sat frozen in time—a graveyard beneath a city that never slept.

Leo scrambled onto the platform, his lungs burning despite his stoic expression. He pulled off his wet hoodie, revealing the intricate black tattoo winding down his right arm: a complex schematic of micro-circuitry overlaid with a medical tracking bar-code.

Sarah climbed up beside him, kneeling immediately to sweep the dark platform with her weapon. "We have ten minutes before they recalibrate their comms and locate the EMP backfire source. Where is the terminal?"

Leo pointed toward a shattered wooden door at the far end of the station marked Stationmaster - Authorized Personnel Only. "In the basement below the control room. My mother built a air-gapped server bank into the old mechanical relay box."

They moved swiftly, their wet boots leaving dark footprints across the tiled floor. Inside the stationmaster’s office, the air smelled of decaying paper and dry rot. Leo dropped to his knees behind a heavy iron desk, pulling away a false wooden panel to reveal a blinking, retrofitted computer rack powered by an industrial battery unit that was still humming softly.

"It's still active," Sarah murmured in disbelief. "She kept this running for five years?"

"She knew Vance would come for us eventually," Leo said. He pulled the metallic drive from his pocket, his small hands working with terrifying speed. He inserted the drive into the main interface. The old monitors flickered to life, bathing their faces in cold, blue luminescence.

PROGRESS: 0% - DECRYPTION KEY REQUIRED.

"Enter the key," Sarah said, watching the door frame with her sidearm raised.

"The key isn't a password, Sarah," Leo said softly, his voice dropping an octave. He reached out and pressed his right palm directly onto the glowing scanner plate attached to the drive reader.

A sharp hum vibrated through the terminal. Blue laser lines mapped the skin of his palm, scanning the bio-synthetic tattoo carved into his flesh. The progress bar jumped instantly: KEY ACCEPTED. UNLOCKING FILE: PROJECT AEGIS.

"Leo..." Sarah turned, her eyes widening as she read the top line of text scrolling across the screen. "This isn't just corporate fraud data."

"No," Leo said, his eyes reflecting the wall of text. "It’s the master blueprint for the automated defense network Sterling sold to the Department of Defense. And I’m not just the keyholder, Sarah. I’m the prototype."

Before Sarah could process his words, the glass roof of the subway station exploded outward in a rain of razor-sharp shards.
