Chapter 7 - High Rise, Cold Glass

Inside the glass-walled penthouse overlooking the city, Victor Vance stood frozen, his crystal glass of whiskey suspended halfway to his lips.
On the wall of monitors before him, red warning lights flashed in sequence. System after system locked up as the encrypted files leaked from the underground terminal flooded the federal servers, defense contractors, and major news networks across the globe.
"Sir," his Chief of Security said, his voice trembling as he stepped into the office. "The Department of Justice just issued an emergency freeze on all our domestic assets. Federal agents are mobilizing toward the tower."
Vance slowly lowered his glass, his handsome, cold features twisting into a terrifying mask of calm fury. He turned to look at his reflection in the dark glass of the window, watching the distant flashing lights of police cruisers beginning to gather at the base of his building.
"Gabriel failed," Vance said softly.
"Gabriel is dead, sir," the security chief reported. "The boy destroyed the extraction team in the Sector 4 vault. They've resurfaced at street level."
Vance walked over to his desk and picked up a heavy silver keycard. "Activate Protocol Omega. If Project Aegis is out in the public, then this city has served its purpose."

"Sir? Protocol Omega will destroy the entire grid!"
Vance pulled a small black transmitter from his desk drawer and pressed his thumb against the biometric reader. "Then let them drown in the dark."
