Chapter 11 - Claire Sloan

Claire contacted me before we found her.

Unknown number.

“Daniel Carter?”

“Yes.”

“I'm Claire Sloan.”

I sat down.

“Where have you been?”

“Hiding from my father.”

“Why?”

“Because Robert Carter was right.”

Dad.

“About what?”

“My father stole from your family.”

“Did he kill Rachel?”

“No.”

Immediate.

Certain.

“How do you know?”

“Because I know who damaged the car.”

My hand tightened around the phone.

“Who?”

“Diane Hale.”

Lily's grandmother.

Vanessa's mother.

“Proof?”

“I saw her.”

That changed everything.

Claire had followed Diane after overhearing Richard arguing with her.

She saw Diane kneeling near Rachel's car.

“What was she doing?”

“I couldn't tell from across the lot.”

“Then how do you know?”

“After the crash, I inspected the brake line. The damage matched a tool I later found in Diane's garage.”

“Did police know?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“My father stopped me.”

“Because he was protecting Diane?”

“No.”

“Then?”

“Because Diane had records implicating him in trust theft.”

Mutual blackmail.

Everyone trapped everyone.

“Why didn't Dad expose it?”

“He was preparing to.”

“Then he died.”

“Yes.”

Heart attack.

Natural.

Claire confirmed Dad had been under enormous stress.

No evidence of foul play.

At least one death could remain what it appeared to be.

“Where is Diane now?”

“Dead.”

She died three years earlier from cancer.

Body confirmed.

No return from that one.

“Does Vanessa know what Diane did?”

“No.”

“Are you sure?”

“I was.”

Not anymore.

Claire said Diane confessed in writing.

Richard kept the confession.

That was the missing second part.

“Why?”

“Insurance.”

Richard used it to control Vanessa after Diane died.

If Vanessa resisted, he would expose Diane and potentially unravel Lily's legal identity.

So Vanessa took payments.

Silenced audits.

Protected Richard.

Then attacked Ethan when Lily disappeared with the box.

Not because Vanessa was mastermind.

Because she was terrified.

Still unforgivable.

But different.

“Where's the confession?”

“Richard’s private house.”

Claire gave us an address.

Then warned:

“He knows you're looking.”

“What will he do?”

“Run.”

“Anywhere specific?”

A pause.

“He has a cabin.”

“Where?”

“Ask Ethan.”

I frowned.

“Why would Ethan know?”

Claire said:

“Because Richard has taken him there before.”

My heart stopped.

May you like

“He did what?”

“Daniel, your son has been alone with Richard more often than you know.”
