Chapter 15 - The second ledger

Vanessa had hidden it for three years.

Not Richard.

Not Dad.

Vanessa.

Diane gave it to her before she died.

“Where?”

Vanessa looked toward Sophie’s nursery.

My blood ran cold.

“In her room?”

“Not where she could reach it.”

Inside the back panel of Sophie’s dresser was a thin blue notebook.

I removed it.

Vanessa stood several feet away.

She knew better than to come closer.

“What’s inside?”

“People Richard paid.”

“We already have that.”

“No.”

She swallowed.

“People who paid Richard.”

That was bigger.

Families.

Executives.

Attorneys.

Some familiar.

Some not.

Most entries appeared connected to trust disputes, custody arrangements, hidden settlements.

Then one name stopped me.

ROBERT CARTER.

My father paid Richard repeatedly.

Why?

Vanessa whispered:

“To hide Lily.”

I looked at amounts.

Dad had financed the original concealment.

Then later paid Richard again.

Different memo:

CORRECTION.

Dad tried to undo it.

Then another:

RACHEL PROTECTION.

Dad paid Richard to protect Rachel?

Or believed he was.

Final entry before Dad died:

STOP ALL PAYMENTS.

Richard lost leverage and money at once.

That explained his shift.

Then another name.

VANESSA HALE.

Payments to Richard.

Not from Richard.

I stared at her.

“You paid him?”

“Yes.”

“For what?”

“To find Lily.”

After Diane died, Vanessa hired Richard to locate her daughter.

That part I hadn't known.

“He told you he couldn't.”

“Yes.”

“But he knew where she was.”

“Yes.”

Vanessa began crying.

“He kept her from me too.”

So Vanessa was both perpetrator and victim.

Neither erased the other.

Then Ethan entered holding Sophie’s hand.

He stopped several feet from Vanessa.

I immediately moved between them.

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

“Ethan…”

He said nothing.

She whispered:

“I'm sorry.”

He looked at me.

“Dad, where’s Lily?”

“Safe.”

“Is she coming home?”

I didn't answer too quickly.

Because home was not something I could promise on behalf of a fourteen-year-old who had been lied to her entire life.

“If she wants to.”

Ethan nodded.

Then my phone buzzed.

Lily.

One image.

A photograph of Richard entering Dad’s old storage building.

Today.

Message:

HE WENT BACK.

Why?

We already removed the files.

Unless something remained.

We went through Dad’s inventory again.

One item was missing from every list.

A black lockbox.

Michael remembered seeing one years ago.

Dad kept it behind a false panel.

With legal oversight, the panel was opened.

Empty.

Except for a note.

RICHARD WILL COME FOR THIS.

Below it:

CLAIRE KNOWS WHERE I MOVED IT.

Claire Sloan.

She answered immediately.

“Your father gave me the lockbox before he died.”

“What was inside?”

“The original identity records for Lily.”

“We already have DNA.”

“Not just Lily.”

“What else?”

Claire hesitated.

“Daniel, Robert discovered something while correcting Lily’s birth record.”

“What?”

“He ran archived genetic comparisons.”

My skin tightened.

“On who?”

“You.”

“Why?”

“Because something in Lily’s results didn't match what he expected.”

I sat down.

“What didn't match?”

“Your paternal line.”

“My father?”

Claire exhaled.

“Robert Carter wasn't your biological father.”

Everything stopped.

Michael stared at me.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

“Then who was?”

“Robert didn't know at first.”

“And later?”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Claire said a name I had heard throughout my childhood.

A man Dad hated.

A man Richard represented before representing us.

Thomas Sloan.

Richard’s older brother.

I stood.

“That would make Richard my uncle.”

“Yes.”

My stomach turned.

“And Lily?”

“His grandniece.”

“And Ethan and Sophie?”

“Same.”

Richard hadn't chosen our family randomly.

He had been managing his brother's hidden bloodline for decades.

“Why hide it?”

“Because Thomas Sloan left a trust.”

Of course.

“How much?”

“Over forty million.”

I closed my eyes.

“Beneficiaries?”

“Biological descendants.”

Me.

Then my children.

All three.

Claire continued:

“Richard has been stealing from that trust since before Lily was born.”

Everything clicked.

Dad discovered my true paternity.

Found the trust.

Tried to correct records.

Richard suppressed Lily because her DNA could expose the lineage.

Rachel discovered Lily and the financial fraud.

Diane panicked and caused Rachel's fatal crash.

Richard covered it up to protect himself.

Vanessa lived under his threats.

And Ethan had nearly been beaten into revealing where the one person carrying the proof had gone.

My daughter.

Lily.

Then the front doorbell rang.

Nobody moved.

Security camera showed an elderly man.

Gray hair.

Dark coat.

Claire stopped breathing on the phone.

“Daniel.”

“What?”

“Don't open that door.”

“Who is he?”

Her voice dropped.

“Thomas Sloan.”

I stared at the screen.

The man who was supposedly my biological father.

According to every record Claire had, Thomas Sloan died twenty-six years ago.

The doorbell rang again.

Then my phone received a message from Richard.

One sentence.

IF THOMAS IS AT YOUR HOUSE, TAKE THE CHILDREN AND RUN.

I looked at Ethan.

At Sophie.

At Vanessa.

Then back at the security screen.

The old man slowly lifted his face toward the camera.

And smiled.

Behind me, Ethan whispered:

“Dad…”

“What?”

He pointed toward the hallway.

Lily stood there.

Pale.

Shaking.

Holding the missing black lockbox against her chest.

She stared at the man outside.

Then whispered:

“I know him.”

I turned.

“How?”

May you like

Her eyes filled with tears.

“He’s the man who’s been hiding me.”
