Chapter 13 - Richard’s leverage

We did not give Richard the box.

We gave investigators copies.

Preserved originals.

Secured the children.

Vanessa begged to help.

I allowed information.

Not access to Ethan.

Trust would take time, if it ever returned.

Richard called me directly.

“You're making this worse.”

“For you?”

“For Lily.”

“She's safe.”

“For now.”

“You touch any of my children—”

“Daniel, don't become theatrical.”

His calmness made me hate him more.

“What do you want?”

“The blue ledger.”

“You already stole millions.”

“Money isn't the problem.”

“Then what?”

“Robert wrote names in that ledger that should never become public.”

“Who?”

“People who helped falsify Lily’s identity.”

“Including you.”

“Yes.”

At least honest.

“And judges? Doctors? Clerks?”

Silence.

That was answer enough.

The conspiracy was broader than one lawyer.

Not cinematic shadow government.

Just a collection of professionals who bent rules for money and influence.

Enough to ruin lives.

“Why keep Lily hidden after Diane died?”

“Because she was evidence.”

“A child is not evidence.”

“To courts, everyone is evidence.”

I wanted to reach through the phone.

“Did you know Diane damaged Rachel’s car?”

“Yes.”

“Before?”

“No.”

“After?”

“Yes.”

“And you covered it up.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because exposing Diane exposed me.”

There it was.

Cowardice.

Everything traced back to people protecting themselves.

“What happened to Claire?”

“My daughter betrayed me.”

“She told the truth.”

“Same thing, depending where you're standing.”

Then Richard said:

“Ask Vanessa why she really married you.”

I looked at her across the room.

“What do you mean?”

“She didn't marry you for Lily.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“Don't listen.”

Richard laughed.

“She married you because Robert paid her.”

I froze.

Vanessa whispered:

“No.”

“How much?”

“Daniel—”

“How much?”

Richard answered.

“Half a million.”

I stared at my wife.

She began crying.

“It wasn't like that.”

“Was there a payment?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Before our wedding.”

“For what?”

“To make sure Lily eventually came home.”

Dad had structured money as security for Vanessa if she stayed near me and helped reconnect us.

Maybe not literally payment for marriage.

But secret financial incentive.

Another betrayal.

Then Richard added:

“Robert also left Vanessa one instruction.”

“What?”

“If Daniel ever discovers Lily before Richard is stopped, take the children and disappear.”

I looked at Vanessa.

She nodded.

Dad had expected this day.

And believed Richard dangerous enough that flight might be necessary.

Then Claire texted me.

We found Richard.

But he wasn't alone.

Photo attached.

Richard at a motel.

Standing beside a woman.

I stared.

Rachel.

Impossible.

No.

Not Rachel.

Her younger sister, Rebecca.

The aunt who had barely spoken to me since Rachel died.

And she was handing Richard a file marked:

ETHAN CARTER.
