Chapter 14 - Rebecca’s betrayal
Rebecca had always blamed me for Rachel’s death.
Not logically.
Emotionally.
She said I traveled too much.
Worked too much.
Wasn't there when Rachel needed me.
After the funeral, she faded from Ethan's life.
Or I thought she did.
Apparently she had been meeting Richard for years.
Why?
Because Rachel left Rebecca as secondary guardian in an early will.
Later revised to me alone after Ethan's birth.
Rebecca believed Richard could challenge it.
“He promised me custody if you failed,” she admitted when confronted.
“Failed how?”
“If Vanessa became dangerous.”
That part had happened.
Richard documented Vanessa's payments.
Her lies.
Now the assault on Ethan.
He planned to use all of it.
Not to protect Ethan.
To gain leverage over me through Rebecca.
“Did you know about Lily?”
“Yes.”
Another adult knew.
Of course.
“Rachel told you?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“She asked me to wait until Robert handled it.”
“And after Rachel died?”
“Richard said revealing Lily would destroy Ethan’s inheritance.”
Lie.
A useful one.
“Did you help him move trust money?”
“No.”
Documents supported that.
Rebecca had been manipulated, not financially involved.
But she gave Richard family information.
Schedules.
School details.
My travel dates.
Including this trip.
That explained why Vanessa received the threat while I was away.
Richard knew.
Rebecca cried.
“I thought he was building a case to protect Ethan.”
“You gave him access to my children.”
“I know.”
No excuses.
Then Claire called.
Richard had fled the motel.
But left the Ethan file.
Inside were custody strategies.
School records.
Therapy notes.
And one sealed envelope from Rachel.
Never delivered.
TO DANIEL — AFTER YOU MEET LILY.
I opened it.
Daniel,
If you're reading this, then Lily found you.
I hope she did.
I learned about her from Robert. I was angry with you for something you never knew, then ashamed of myself.
I smiled through tears.
Rachel.
Always honest even when it hurt.
She continued:
Vanessa was a frightened nineteen-year-old when Lily was born. Robert and Diane made decisions for both of you.
Do not punish Lily for any of it.
Then:
But be careful with Vanessa.
Not because she is evil.
Because fear makes her choose herself first.
I looked toward Vanessa.
Exactly.
Rachel's final lines:
Richard knows this.
He will use her fear against Ethan.
If that happens, ask Vanessa about the second blue ledger.
