Chapter 12 - Ethan’s secret trips

Ethan cried when I asked.
Not because Richard hurt him physically.
Because Richard made him keep secrets.
“Mom said it was okay.”
Rachel.
Before she died.
She trusted Richard then.
Richard sometimes picked Ethan up from preschool.
After Rachel died, I allowed occasional outings because Richard acted like a grandfather.
I had forgotten some.
Ethan had not.
“He took me to a cabin.”
“How old were you?”
“Five. Then six.”
“Why?”
“He said Mom left things there.”
“What things?”
“Videos.”
Rachel had recorded messages for Ethan.
Richard controlled access.
“Did he show you all of them?”
“No.”
“One had Lily?”
Ethan nodded.
That was how he knew.
Rachel appeared on video with a photograph of baby Lily.
She told Ethan:
“You may have another sister someday. If she comes to you, help her find your dad.”
My dead wife had prepared my son to correct what adults refused to fix.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Mr. Richard said you'd get mad at Mom.”
I closed my eyes.
Manipulation.
“Where’s the cabin?”
Ethan described a lake.
Green roof.
Wooden bear by the porch.
Michael recognized it.
Richard owned property near Lake Mercer.
Through attorneys and law enforcement, the cabin was searched.
Richard was gone.
But the interior held boxes.
Rachel's videos.
Dad's records.
Diane's confession.
And dozens of photographs of my family.
Some recent.
Richard had been monitoring us.
Diane's signed statement was there.
She admitted damaging Rachel's brake line.
Her motive was panic.
Rachel intended to expose Lily’s falsified records.
Diane believed she would lose Lily.
She claimed she only meant to prevent Rachel from driving by causing the brake warning system to fail and force repair.
But she damaged the wrong line.
Rachel drove.
Crash followed.
Intent did not erase consequence.
Diane died carrying that guilt.
Richard hid the confession to protect himself.
Then we found a ledger.
Payments.
Vanessa.
Marcus.
Claire.
Others.
And one entry:
V. CARTER — EMERGENCY ACCESS.
Vanessa had received a large payment the morning I left for my business trip.
$50,000.
I confronted her.
“What was it for?”
She stared at the transfer.
“I didn't know he sent that.”
“Then why?”
Her phone buzzed.
Unknown sender.
She looked.
Went white.
“What?”
She showed me.
Photograph of Richard.
Standing beside Lily's school.
Taken that morning.
