Chapter 4 - My father’s storage unit

Dad died of a heart attack at fifty-nine.
No mystery.
No missing body.
I held his hand in the hospital.
So Lily couldn't mean she was going to find him physically.
Maybe she meant something he left.
I searched Dad's old records.
There was one storage unit still billed annually to his estate.
I had never closed it because my mother said it held business archives she wasn't ready to sort.
The unit was forty minutes away.
I went with Michael.
We found the lock already open.
Inside, boxes had been moved.
Someone else had been there recently.
One carton had Dad's handwriting:
V. HALE.
Vanessa Hale.
My stomach tightened.
Inside were photographs.
Vanessa as a teenager.
Her mother, Diane.
A man I recognized immediately.
My father.
“Jesus,” Michael whispered.
Dad and Diane Hale.
Together repeatedly over many years.
Another photograph showed Dad standing beside a hospital bassinet.
Date:
Baby Lily.
Then a letter.
Robert,
You promised Vanessa would never know the truth about Lily until she was old enough to understand.
— Diane.
Michael looked at me.
“Dad had another family?”
Maybe.
I kept searching.
Birth records.
Lily Grace Hale.
Mother:
Diane Hale.
Father:
Blank.
Vanessa was listed in unrelated documents as Diane's daughter.
Meaning Lily and Vanessa were legally half-sisters.
But why did Dad write Carter?
Then I found an envelope addressed to me.
DANIEL — IF LILY EVER COMES LOOKING.
My hands started shaking.
I opened it.
Son,
Lily is not your sister.
I stopped.
Michael read over my shoulder.
“She is your daughter.”
The floor seemed to move.
“No.”
I kept reading.
“You were twenty-two. There are circumstances you do not remember, and I carry responsibility for that.”
My memory flashed to one weekend in Ohio.
A fraternity friend.
A party.
Alcohol.
A woman whose name I never knew.
Except maybe I had known.
Dad continued:
“Lily's mother is not Diane.”
I looked at Michael.
Then:
“Her biological mother is Vanessa.”
Everything inside me went silent.
Vanessa had given birth to my child at nineteen.
May you like
Then spent years telling everyone Lily was her younger sister.
And somehow I had never known.
