Chapter 2 - THE NAME MARCUS NEVER EXPECTEDThe police arrived eleven minutes later.

By then, the Whitmore party had collapsed into chaos.
Officers sealed the west hallway. Guests were ordered into the ballroom. Phones continued recording until police demanded they be lowered.
Ava never released Danielle's hand.
Officer Grant crouched several feet away from her.
“What's your full name?”
Ava hesitated.
“Ava Whitmore.”
Marcus looked up.
Evelyn immediately stood.
“She is confused.”
Officer Grant pointed toward the chair.
“Sit down, Mrs. Whitmore.”
Marcus approached slowly.
“Ava?”
She recoiled.
He stopped.
Danielle saw pain cross his face.
But pain proved nothing.
Not yet.
Officer Grant continued.
“Do you know your father's name?”
Ava stared at Marcus.
Then she pointed.
Every whisper in the hallway stopped.
Marcus looked as though the floor had disappeared beneath him.
“No.”
Ava's eyes filled with tears.
“Mommy said you didn't know.”
Marcus dropped into a chair.
“Who's your mother?”
“Claire.”
His expression shattered.
Danielle noticed Evelyn close her eyes.
Marcus turned toward her.
“Claire?”
Evelyn remained silent.
“Mother.”
Nothing.
Marcus stood.
“CLAIRE HAD A CHILD?”
Ava began crying.
Danielle pulled her closer.
“Lower your voice.”
Marcus immediately stopped.
“I'm sorry.”
Then something fell from Ava's dress.
A silver key.
Evelyn moved faster than anyone expected.
“Give me that.”
Officer Grant picked it up first.
“What does it open?”
“Nothing.”
Ava shook her head.
“Mommy's blue box.”
Marcus stared at her.
“What blue box?”
“Grandma took it.”
Evelyn's expression changed.
That was enough for Grant.
Officers searched the hidden chamber.
They found bottled water, crackers, a blanket, children's drawings and dozens of scratch marks along one wall.
Danielle counted them.
Some were old.
Much older than Ava could have made.
Her stomach tightened.
Then an officer carried out a drawing.
A child had drawn two women near a staircase.
One was falling.
The other wore red.
“Who drew this?” Grant asked.
Ava raised her hand.
“That's Mommy.”
She pointed to the falling woman.
“And the other woman?”
Ava looked directly at Evelyn.
Nobody needed an answer.
Marcus stepped backward.
“What happened to Claire?”
Evelyn's attorney appeared from the ballroom.
“My client isn't answering further questions.”
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“Your client is my mother.”
The attorney said nothing.
Ava tugged Danielle's hand again.
“The blue box has Mommy's letters.”
“Where is it?”
Ava pointed toward the ballroom.
“Under Grandpa.”
Everyone looked toward the enormous portrait of Charles Whitmore hanging above the fireplace.
Police removed it.
Behind it was a steel compartment.
Ava's silver key opened the lock.
Inside sat a blue metal box.
Evelyn went pale.
Officer Grant put on gloves.
Letters filled the box.
Photographs.
Medical records.
A flash drive.
And one envelope addressed to Marcus.
He stared at his own name.
Claire's handwriting.
His hands began shaking.
“When was this written?”
Grant checked the date.
Eight years earlier.
Marcus opened it.
The first sentence destroyed whatever remained of his composure.
Marcus,
I'm pregnant.
He lowered the letter.
Danielle watched tears fill his eyes.
“I never got this.”
Evelyn looked away.
Marcus continued reading.
Claire had begged him to meet her.
She had written that Evelyn was threatening her.
That someone was following her.
That if anything happened, Marcus should never believe she had abandoned their child.
Then came the final line.
Your father knows what Evelyn is doing. He says he has proof.
Marcus slowly looked toward the portrait of his dead father.
“My father?”
Officer Grant took the flash drive.
Evelyn suddenly whispered:
“Don't open that.”
Everyone turned.
Grant studied her.
“Why?”
Evelyn realized her mistake.
Too late.
Marcus stepped toward her.
“What is on it?”
She said nothing.
Grant placed the drive inside an evidence bag.
“We'll find out.”
Ava was taken to the hospital.
Danielle went with her.
Marcus followed separately.
Hours later, Grant arrived with the results.
The flash drive contained recordings.
Claire secretly meeting Evelyn.
Evelyn offering money.
Claire refusing.
Evelyn threatening custody.
Then came the final video.
Claire stared directly into the camera.
“If you're watching this, Evelyn found me.”
Marcus covered his mouth.
Claire continued.
“But she isn't the only person I'm afraid of.”
Grant paused the recording.
Marcus looked up.
“What?”
“There are twenty-three seconds missing.”
“Deleted?”
“Yes.”
“Can you recover them?”
“We're trying.”
Grant restarted the video.
Claire leaned toward the camera.
“If I disappear, protect Ava from—”
Static.
The recording jumped.
Then Claire said something that made Marcus slowly rise.
“Charles was right. Someone inside this family killed him.”
The video ended.
Marcus stared at the black screen.
His father had supposedly died of a heart attack.
Now Claire was suggesting murder.
And Danielle realized Ava hadn't been hidden merely because she was an unwanted child.
May you like
She had been hidden because she was connected to evidence.
Evidence someone was still willing to kill for.
