Chapter 6 - THE NIGHT THE WALLS WENT DARK“GET AVA OUT!”

Marcus's voice ripped through the darkness.

Danielle grabbed Ava.

Claire reached them seconds later.

Emergency lights failed.

Someone had deliberately cut backup power.

Marcus moved toward the hallway.

Claire grabbed him.

“Don't play hero.”

“My daughter—”

“Needs her father alive.”

Police protection had been stationed outside.

But someone had triggered a false emergency call two blocks away.

The timing was perfect.

Too perfect.

Danielle heard footsteps downstairs.

Then a man's voice.

“Marcus.”

He knew they were listening.

“Bring me Charles's drive.”

Thomas Vale.

Grant's backup unit was minutes away.

Vale didn't need minutes.

He needed sixty seconds.

Marcus whispered to Danielle.

“Take them through the service corridor.”

“What about you?”

“He wants me.”

Claire grabbed Marcus's face.

“Do not make another decision for everyone else.”

He stared at her.

She continued.

“We move together.”

For once, Marcus listened.

They entered the old service passage behind the kitchen.

Ava suddenly stopped.

“No.”

Danielle crouched.

“What?”

“The walls.”

She was trembling.

Danielle understood.

Ava couldn't enter another hidden passage.

Danielle took her hand.

“This one has a door on both ends.”

Ava looked at her.

“Promise?”

“Promise.”

They moved.

Vale entered the kitchen seconds later.

He found the passage.

But police arrived before he reached them.

Gunshots were heard downstairs.

Then silence.

Grant appeared.

“Stay here.”

Minutes passed.

Finally:

“We got him.”

Vale was alive.

In his possession police found forged passports, cash and a list of names.

Claire's name was crossed out.

Nora's was crossed out.

Charles's was crossed out.

Evelyn's name had a date beside it.

Tomorrow.

Even imprisoned, Evelyn had been marked for death.

Vale had intended to erase everyone connected to the conspiracy.

His arrest broke the remaining network.

Senator Cross was charged.

Richard Hale cooperated.

Vale eventually confessed to helping cover Charles's murder, though he insisted Evelyn administered the fatal drug.

Evelyn blamed Cross.

Cross blamed Vale.

Forensic evidence ultimately established enough for prosecutors to bring the case to trial.

But Danielle cared less about the political empire collapsing than the little girl sleeping upstairs.

The next morning, Ava walked into the hallway.

Sunlight had returned.

She looked at the service passage.

Then at Danielle.

“I went through.”

“You did.”

“And I came out.”

“Yes.”

Ava smiled.

That was victory.

Not headlines.

May you like

Not arrests.

A child learning that entering darkness didn't mean she had to remain there.
