Chapter 9 - AVA'S HOUSEOne year after the night behind the painting, the mansion had a new name.

AVA'S HOUSE.
The plaque near the entrance read:
NO CHILD SHOULD HAVE TO KNOCK FROM BEHIND A WALL TO BE HEARD.
Children ran through corridors once occupied by politicians and millionaires.
The ballroom hosted support groups.
The dining room became an art studio.
And Ava's hidden chamber had become the brightest room in the house.
Danielle stood near the window one afternoon when Ava ran toward her.
“Dani!”
“What?”
Ava held up a drawing.
MY FAMILY.
Claire.
Marcus.
Ava.
Danielle.
Danielle laughed through tears.
“You put me in your family?”
Ava frowned.
“You are.”
“What am I?”
Ava thought carefully.
“My Dani.”
Claire smiled from the doorway.
Marcus stood beside her.
Their hands almost touched.
Not quite.
There was no rushed wedding.
No fairy-tale promise.
Just two people learning whether love could survive after truth.
Danielle preferred that.
Real healing was slower.
That evening, Ava returned to the reading room.
“Do you remember where I was?”
Danielle pointed.
“Right there.”
Ava placed her hand against the wall.
“I thought nobody was coming.”
Claire's eyes filled.
Ava turned.
“But somebody did.”
She reached into her pocket.
The silver key.
Police had returned it after the investigation.
Ava handed it to Danielle.
“You keep it.”
“This belongs to you.”
“I don't need it.”
“Why?”
Ava looked around.
“Nothing's locked anymore.”
Danielle couldn't speak.
She hugged her.
Marcus watched them.
Then his phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
He opened the message.
One photograph.
Danielle working the Whitmore party.
But the photograph had been taken hours before guests arrived.
Danielle was standing outside the mansion talking to someone.
Marcus enlarged the image.
His heart stopped.
The other person was Nora Fields.
A second message arrived.
SHE DIDN'T FIND AVA BY ACCIDENT.
Marcus slowly looked across the room.
Danielle was laughing with Ava.
He wanted to confront her.
Then he remembered Evelyn.
Ask first.
Assume nothing.
Marcus put the phone away.
Whatever the photograph meant, he would not destroy Ava's happiness because of another anonymous accusation.
But the question remained.
May you like
Had Danielle truly wandered toward that painting by chance?
Or had someone sent her there?
