Chapter 3 - CLAIRE'S LAST WARNINGMorning came without anyone noticing.

Ava slept in the hospital while Marcus sat beside the window.
Danielle watched him stare into the sunrise.
“I believed everything my mother told me,” he finally said.
Danielle didn't comfort him.
“You chose to.”
Marcus looked at her.
“Yes.”
That answer mattered.
He explained Claire had been the one person Evelyn never approved of. Claire had no famous surname, no political family and no interest in becoming part of the Whitmore machine.
Marcus loved her.
But when his campaign began, he asked her to remain private.
Claire refused.
“She told me if I couldn't love her publicly, I didn't deserve her privately.”
Danielle looked toward sleeping Ava.
“She was right.”
“Yes.”
Police soon confirmed Marcus was Ava's biological father.
When Ava woke, she asked him a simple question.
“Did Mommy try to tell you?”
Marcus cried.
“Yes.”
“Did you listen?”
“No.”
Ava studied him for several seconds.
“Then you have to listen now.”
Danielle would remember those words.
Because they changed him.
The investigation uncovered Nora Fields, a former Whitmore housekeeper who had secretly raised Ava for years.
Nora had recently died.
But she had left a storage locker.
Inside were photographs documenting Ava's childhood.
School records.
Birthday cards.
And an envelope.
Marcus opened it.
Nora explained that Claire had trusted her.
Years earlier, Nora had found Ava hiding inside an apartment closet after Claire vanished.
Blood covered the staircase.
Evelyn had already disappeared.
Nora took Ava and ran.
But one line stopped everyone.
Claire may still be alive.
Police discovered postcards.
Chicago.
Denver.
Portland.
Seattle.
San Diego.
All written in Claire's handwriting.
The last postcard was four years old.
Ava safe?
Nora had written beneath it:
Yes.
But someone else had added three words.
SHE FOUND ME.
Marcus stared at the handwriting.
“Mother?”
Grant shook his head.
“We don't know.”
Danielle looked at the postcards.
Something felt wrong.
Evelyn had spent years controlling people through money and reputation.
But this message felt different.
Short.
Predatory.
Personal.
“What if Evelyn wasn't the person Claire was running from?”
Marcus looked at Danielle.
Grant said nothing.
Because investigators were beginning to wonder the same thing.
That evening, Ava woke from a nightmare screaming.
Danielle ran to her.
“The wall!”
“It's okay.”
“She closed it!”
“Who?”
Ava couldn't answer.
Then she whispered something unexpected.
“There was a man.”
Danielle froze.
“What man?”
“He came before Grandma.”
“Where?”
“Miss Nora's house.”
Ava struggled to remember.
“He wore a gray coat.”
“Did you know him?”
“No.”
“What did he want?”
Ava looked frightened.
“The necklace.”
“What necklace?”
“Miss Nora's black necklace.”
Danielle immediately called Grant.
Police searched photographs from Nora's belongings.
One showed Nora wearing a thick black locket.
Claire saw the photograph remotely.
Her response came minutes later through investigators.
Find that necklace.
Charles hid something inside it.
Danielle stared at Marcus.
Marcus stared back.
Claire was alive.
And somehow she knew they were looking.
But the message had been sent from an anonymous account that disappeared seconds later.
Grant traced it.
The location shocked them.
May you like
It had originated less than three miles from the Whitmore mansion.
Someone close by was watching.
