Bedrooms became emergency housing.
Offices became counseling rooms.
And the chamber behind Evelyn's portrait was torn open.
Workers removed the entire wall.
Ava watched from a safe distance.
“Don't cover it again,” she said.
Danielle smiled.
“We won't.”
“What will it be?”
Ava thought.
“A reading room.”
So they built one.
Bright windows.
Bookshelves.
Cushions.
No locks.
No portraits.
Danielle lost her catering job because of the scandal.
Then Ms. Harper offered her work at the center.
“You listened when everyone else walked past.”
Danielle became a family advocate.
Marcus resigned from public office.
He sold much of his inherited property and used the money to support victims affected by the foundation crimes.
Claire never immediately forgave him.
That mattered.
Their reconciliation wasn't magical.
Marcus apologized.
Claire challenged him.
Sometimes they argued.
Sometimes she left.
But Marcus stopped chasing her when she needed space.
He learned that love was not possession.
Ava slowly began trusting him.
One afternoon, she spilled juice at his townhouse.
The glass shattered.
Ava froze.
Marcus immediately noticed.
“It's okay.”
“Are you mad?”
“No.”
“Grandma got mad.”
Marcus knelt.
“I'm not Grandma.”
Ava stared at him.
“Promise?”
His eyes filled.
“I promise.”
She believed him.
That night, Marcus cried alone in his car.
