Federal investigators decrypted the files.
What emerged was bigger than anyone expected.
Charles Whitmore had discovered millions moving through fake charities.
Bribes.
Illegal political donations.
Shell corporations.
Several payments led to Evelyn.
Others led to Senator William Cross, one of the most powerful men at the party the night Danielle found Ava.
Marcus recognized him immediately.
“He was standing twenty feet from that hallway.”
Danielle felt cold.
“Then he saw everything.”
The files also contained audio recorded shortly before Charles died.
Charles confronted Evelyn and Cross.
He threatened to contact federal authorities.
Cross replied:
“You won't survive the scandal.”
Then came breaking glass.
The recording ended.
Charles died the next morning.
His death investigation was reopened.
Meanwhile, police traced Claire to Cedar Ridge, California.
She had been living under the name Sarah Bennett.
When officers reached her house, however, she was gone.
Her coffee was still warm.
A suitcase sat open.
And an envelope lay on the bed.
FOR AVA.
Claire wrote that someone had found her.
But this time she was done running.
She left an address.
An abandoned church outside town.
Police arrived before sunrise.
Claire was alive.
Marcus received the call at 5:42 a.m.
He collapsed against the wall.
Danielle crouched beside him.
“She's alive.”
“I buried her.”
“You believed she was dead.”
“I stopped searching.”
“Then don't waste the second chance.”
Claire was taken to a hospital.
When Marcus entered her room, eight years of grief seemed to occupy the space between them.
“You got old,” Claire whispered.
Marcus laughed through tears.
“So did you.”
Then Claire noticed Danielle.
“You heard her?”
Danielle nodded.
Claire reached for her hand.
“Everyone heard something eventually.”
Her grip tightened.
“You were the first person who listened.”
Claire told them the truth.
Evelyn had found her apartment eight years earlier.
They argued near the staircase.
Evelyn grabbed her.
Claire fell.
She survived.
Richard Hale, Evelyn's attorney, secretly arranged treatment under a false identity and staged Claire's disappearance.
But Claire revealed something else.
Hale wasn't acting alone.
“William Cross knew.”
Marcus stiffened.
Claire nodded.
“Your father discovered Cross and Evelyn were moving money through the foundation.”
“Did they kill him?”
“I think so.”
“And Ava?”
Claire closed her eyes.
“They believed I gave Charles's evidence to Nora.”
Marcus finally understood.
Ava had never been the secret.
She was leverage.
A way to force Claire and Nora to surrender evidence.
Claire looked toward Danielle.
“But something doesn't make sense.”
“What?”
“Cross knew where I lived in Cedar Ridge.”
“Maybe Hale told him.”
Claire shook her head.
“Hale didn't know.”
Silence.
Marcus leaned forward.
“Then who did?”
Claire looked terrified.
“Someone I've trusted for years.”
Before she could say more, Officer Grant entered.
His expression stopped everyone.
“What happened?” Danielle asked.
Grant placed a photograph on the table.
Security footage from Claire's Cedar Ridge street.
A vehicle had been parked outside her home two nights before she disappeared.
Marcus recognized it.
It belonged to the Whitmore Foundation.
But Evelyn was imprisoned.
The foundation had been frozen.
And according to its records, only one person still had authorized access.
Marcus Whitmore.
Claire slowly looked at him.
Marcus went pale.
“I wasn't there.”
Grant nodded.
“We know.”
“Then who used my credentials?”
