Chapter 5 - THE MAN WITH MARCUS'S NAMEInvestigators discovered Marcus's identity had been used for years.

Bank approvals.

Security clearances.

Vehicle access.

Private foundation accounts.

Someone had created a shadow version of him inside the Whitmore system.

Marcus suddenly understood why Evelyn had always insisted on controlling his passwords, staff and schedules.

“She built my life so she could use it.”

But Evelyn denied knowing anything.

For the first time, Danielle believed her fear might be genuine.

Grant showed Evelyn the access logs.

Her face changed.

“Where did you get these?”

“Who used Marcus's credentials?”

“I don't know.”

“Mrs. Whitmore.”

“I said I don't know.”

Then Grant mentioned the gray-coated man Ava remembered.

Evelyn stopped breathing.

“Who is he?”

No answer.

Grant placed Senator Cross's photograph down.

Evelyn shook her head.

Not Cross.

Another photograph.

Richard Hale.

Again, no.

Then a third.

A man named Thomas Vale.

Evelyn whispered:

“Oh God.”

Vale had served as Charles Whitmore's chief financial officer.

After Charles died, Vale disappeared from public life.

On paper, he retired.

In reality, investigators discovered he had continued operating Whitmore shell companies.

Claire recognized the name.

Nora had once warned her:

If anything happens to Evelyn, watch Vale.

That revelation twisted the case again.

Evelyn had committed terrible crimes.

But she wasn't controlling everything anymore.

The machine she helped build had outgrown her.

Federal agents raided Vale's properties.

He was gone.

Inside one house, however, they discovered photographs.

Claire.

Marcus.

Nora.

Ava.

Danielle.

Danielle stared at her own photograph.

It had been taken after she began working at Ava's House.

“He's been watching me?”

Grant nodded.

“Because you opened the wall.”

One photograph showed Ava leaving school.

Marcus lost control.

“I'll kill him.”

Claire stepped in front of him.

“No.”

“He's watching our daughter.”

“And if you become violent, he wins.”

Marcus stared at her.

Claire's voice softened.

“Be her father. Let the police catch him.”

Marcus backed down.

It was another small choice.

But Claire noticed.

That evening, Ava asked Danielle why adults lied.

“Sometimes they're afraid.”

“Grandma wasn't afraid.”

Danielle thought about it.

“Yes, she was.”

“Of what?”

“Losing control.”

Ava considered that.

“That's a stupid reason.”

Danielle almost smiled.

“Yes.”

Then Ava remembered something.

The gray-coated man had once asked Nora where “the second copy” was.

Second copy.

Grant immediately reopened Charles's evidence inventory.

The locket had contained financial files.

But Charles had apparently made another copy.

Nobody knew where it was.

Until Ava drew a picture.

A house.

A tree.

A little girl.

And beneath the tree, a red X.

Claire stared at it.

“Nora's backyard.”

Police excavated the location.

They found a waterproof container.

Inside was another drive.

And a handwritten letter from Charles.

Marcus,

If you're reading this, then I failed you.

Marcus stopped.

The letter revealed Charles knew Evelyn had manipulated their son for years.

He had planned to expose everything after gathering enough evidence.

But his final paragraph contained a warning.

Do not assume Evelyn is the most dangerous person in this house.

She needs control.

Vale needs silence.

And a man who needs silence will eventually kill everyone who knows how loudly the truth can speak.

Marcus lowered the letter.

Danielle looked toward the windows.

Outside, darkness had fallen.

Then every light in the building went out.

May you like

Ava screamed.

And somewhere downstairs, glass shattered.
