Adrienne sat beside her.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Eleanor understood immediately.
“Because I was trying to prove it.”
“You could have come to me.”
“You loved her.”
Adrienne looked away.
Eleanor squeezed her hand.
“I needed evidence strong enough that you wouldn’t have to choose between your mother and the woman you planned to marry.”
Adrienne’s eyes filled.
“There was never a choice.”
“There always is when love is involved.”
Eleanor revealed that Grace had helped her investigate the missing foundation money.
They discovered shell corporations tied to Vanessa’s father, Arthur Sterling.
Then came the threats.
Anonymous calls.
Medication disappearing.
A brake line mysteriously damaged.
Finally Vanessa confronted Eleanor.
Sign the property transfer.
Stop investigating.
Or lose everything.
Yesterday, Eleanor refused.
That was when Vanessa reached for the soup.
