Chapter 1 - The camera above the staircase

The security video lasted twenty-seven seconds.

That was all it took to destroy my second marriage.

My name is Adrian Cole.

I was forty-one years old.

I had two children.

Lily was eight.

Noah had just turned one.

Vanessa was Noah’s mother.

She was Lily’s stepmother.

And until that afternoon, I believed the worst problem in our house was that the two of them did not get along.

I was wrong.

I sat in the hospital family room with Noah asleep against my chest while my head of security opened the recording on a laptop.

Lily sat beside me.

Her small hand rested on Noah’s sock.

The video began.

Timestamp:

4:18:07 p.m.

Noah appeared at the top of the stairs.

He had recently learned to walk.

Still unsteady.

Still holding walls and furniture whenever available.

Vanessa came into frame behind him.

She looked down the hallway.

Once.

Then again.

No Lily.

No nanny.

No me.

She stepped behind Noah.

Raised one foot.

And kicked him forward.

Not hard enough to send him flying.

Hard enough to knock a one-year-old off balance at the top of twelve stairs.

He fell.

Vanessa did not reach for him.

Did not scream.

Did not move down the stairs.

She simply watched.

Then I appeared at the bottom.

The rest matched my memory.

I lifted Noah.

Turned.

Struck Vanessa.

She hit the railing.

Then she pointed toward a hallway where Lily had not even appeared yet.

“She pushed him!”

My security director paused the video.

Nobody spoke.

Lily whispered:

“I told you.”

I looked at her.

“What?”

Her eyes filled.

May you like

“She always says it’s me.”

That sentence told me the camera had exposed more than one kick.
