Chapter 4 - My own violence did not disappear

The footage also showed me slapping Vanessa.

Noah was in my arms.

She was not attacking him anymore.

No immediate threat.

I had hit her because I had just watched my baby tumble down the stairs.

Emotion explained it.

It did not automatically justify it.

Her scalp required staples because she struck the railing after my slap.

My attorney, David Mercer, told me:

“Do not tell yourself that because she did something worse, your act no longer matters.”

“I’m not.”

“Good.”

Police reviewed my conduct separately.

I was not arrested that evening.

But prosecutors later filed a misdemeanor assault charge.

I could not buy my way out of sequence.
