Chapter 24 - Lily asks whether Vanessa ever loved her
This question was harder than every deposition.
“Did Vanessa ever love me?”
I could not know.
So I said:
“I think she had feelings for you that were complicated.”
“That means no.”
“Not necessarily.”
“She wanted me gone.”
“Yes.”
“People don’t do that if love.”
Sometimes they do.
Adults can love badly.
Possessively.
Competitively.
Selfishly.
But I did not want to teach Lily that abuse should be renamed love.
So I said:
“Whatever she felt, what she did was not loving behavior.”
Lily accepted that better.
Then:
“Do you love Noah more?”
“No.”
“He’s baby.”
“That means he needs more hands-on care. It does not mean more love.”
“Even when I’m annoying?”
“Especially impressive amounts of love are required then.”
