Chapter 12 - THE WOMAN ON THE SCREEN
At noon the next day, a video appeared online.
Claire sat against a white wall, pale but alive.
“I left because I was afraid of my brother,” she said. “Daniel became unstable after our father's death. I authorize Elliot Price to exercise my voting proxy.”
The image was convincing enough to stop Daniel's heart.
Noah watched once. “That's not Mom.”
He pointed to her right hand. Claire's little finger had been broken in college and never lay flat. The woman's hand was perfect.
Forensic analysts found face replacement, synthetic speech, and edited eye movements. In the reflection of a dark television stood Vanessa.
The room was Vanessa's mother's condo on Harbor Street.
Ruiz obtained a warrant. The condo was empty, but closets held wigs, voice recordings, lighting rigs, and folders labeled DANIEL, NOAH, BOARD, BANK.
One script contained a line that had never been published:
My brother caused our father's death.
Daniel read it twice.
