Chapter 13 - VANESSA'S VERSION
Vanessa called after midnight.
“You think I invented all of this,” she said.
“You attacked a child.”
“I was trying to stop Noah from opening that drawer before Voss reached him.”
“You raised a cane over him.”
Her silence admitted what her words would not.
Then she said, “Your father did not die of heart failure.”
Daniel felt the room narrow. “What did you do?”
“I did nothing. That was the problem. None of us did.”
She told him Robert Carter had created a private ledger documenting bribes, illegal surveillance, and overseas payments. Claire discovered it while auditing the trust. Elliot wanted the company. Hale wanted his medical fraud hidden. Voss wanted the ledger destroyed.
“And what did you want?” Daniel asked.
Vanessa's voice cracked. “A life where your family couldn't decide whether I belonged in it.”
Resentment had made the first compromise easy. Fear made every compromise after it feel necessary.
“Where is Claire?”
“Ask Hale about Mara Cole.”

The call ended. Ruiz traced it to a train station, but Vanessa was already gone.
On a bench, officers found Daniel's wedding ring.
