Chapter 8 - THE GARAGE

Daniel did not go alone. Ruiz's team watched from unmarked vehicles.
Hale stood beneath the clinic's fluorescent lights, his expensive coat hanging loose on a body that seemed to have aged overnight.
“We took Claire to your father's lake house,” he said. “She had a skull fracture. I stabilized her.”
Daniel's hands closed into fists. “Why not a hospital?”
“Because Elliot controlled the money, Vanessa controlled your trust, and I had spent years signing papers I should never have signed.”
“So you hid her.”
“At first, to save her. Then to save myself.”
“Where is she now?”
Hale looked toward the security camera. “Claire woke up. She remembered everything. She told us the money was not the real secret.”
A sharp crack echoed through the garage.
Blood spread across Hale's chest. Daniel caught him as a second bullet shattered a windshield.
Ruiz's officers surged from cover. The shooter disappeared up a ramp.
Paramedics lifted Hale onto a stretcher. He seized Daniel's sleeve.

Then his grip released.
