Chapter 25 - THE THING IN CLAIRE'S HAND
Digital enhancement revealed a tiny cassette key in Voss's fingers. It belonged to an old micro-recorder Robert Carter used in the 1990s.
The device itself was missing.
Noah remembered a music box Claire had given Lily shortly before disappearing. “She said it held a song Grandpa never wanted us to hear.”
The music box remained in Vanessa's dressing room. Beneath the velvet dancer was a microcassette.
Robert Carter's voice emerged through static.
He described bribing a federal inspector after a factory accident twenty-six years earlier. Twelve workers had died. Carter Meridian blamed a subcontractor. Voss destroyed the maintenance reports. Hale falsified medical timelines.
Then Robert named one survivor who could expose them.
Elena Reed.
Vanessa's mother.
Daniel finally understood the fury beneath Vanessa's choices. He also understood the boundary she had crossed: injustice had explained her; it had not absolved her.
The tape ended with Robert saying, “If Claire finds this, Daniel must never know.”
