Chapter 39 - THE MESSAGE FROM DAVID
Noah called from downstairs. “Uncle Dan, you need to see this.”
Claire's old computer had awakened after a scheduled encrypted process completed. A message waited in an offline folder.
It was not from Claire.
The sender was DAVID MERCER.
Noah's father.
David had supposedly drowned when Noah was three. His body was never recovered.
The message contained one sentence:
IF CLAIRE IS DEAD, ROBERT'S PARTNER WILL COME FOR NOAH.
Attached was a photograph of the lake house deed. The sealed beneficiary line had been uncovered.
EVELYN CARTER.
Daniel looked toward the living room, where his mother slept beneath a knitted blanket.
The woman everyone believed could remember nothing had owned the center of the conspiracy all along.
