Chapter 38 - THE DRAWER AGAIN
Daniel entered his father's office alone.
He emptied the top drawer: tax documents, old receipts, a photograph of Robert and Claire when she was ten.
Beneath the wooden lining lay an envelope Daniel had never seen.
His name was written in Robert's hand.
Inside was a second photograph. Robert stood beside young Claire at the lake house. Marcus Hale watched from the trees, decades before he became the family doctor.
On the back, Robert had written:
If Daniel opens the wrong drawer, show him this one.
A note followed.
Claire was investigating more than Elliot and Vanessa. Ask who truly owned the lake house.
Daniel checked the deed online.
The property had never belonged to Robert Carter.
