Chapter 4 - The First Chase“ Pack a bag.”

Sarah stared at him.
“What?”
“Passports. Lily's medicine. Clothes. Nothing else.”
The gentleness vanished from Adrian's voice.
He became the man New York feared.
Lily looked up from the floor.
“Daddy?”
Adrian immediately softened.
“It's okay, baby.”
Outside, tires screamed.
A suppressed burst of gunfire echoed from the street.
Sarah grabbed Lily.
The apartment windows shook.
“Down!” Adrian shouted.
Glass exploded somewhere below.
Vincent's voice came through the earpiece.
“They're breaching the lobby.”
Adrian checked the hallway.
“Rear exit?”
“Clear for twenty seconds.”
He grabbed Sarah's hand.
They ran.
Lily cried into her mother's shoulder.
“Daddy, what's happening?”
“Thunder,” Adrian said.
Even while running through a building under attack, he smiled at her.
“Just thunder.”
They reached the service stairs.
Adrian suddenly stopped.
Pain exploded across his chest.
His hand gripped the railing.
Sarah caught him.
“Adrian!”
“I’m fine.”
“You're not!”
His vision blurred.
His heart stumbled.
Then recovered.
He forced himself upright.
“Keep moving.”
Below them, heavy boots thundered through the lobby.
