Chapter 7 - The Device Adrian woke beneath harsh surgical lights.

A steady heartbeat sounded beside him.
Sixty-eight beats per minute.
For once, the rhythm didn't frighten him.
Sarah sat beside the bed.
“You died.”
Adrian's lips moved.
“I came back.”
“You scared me.”
“I’m sorry.”
She looked at the bandage over his chest.
The device inside him was now his second chance.
Then the door opened.
Vincent entered.
“We have a problem.”
Adrian's eyes sharpened.
“Volkov?”
“Someone inside the estate gave him our location.”
Sarah went still.
“Someone here?”
Vincent nodded.
“The signal came from the east-wing security quarters.”
Adrian already knew.
“Frankie.”
Vincent looked away.
Frankie Carbone had been with Adrian for years.
A trusted lieutenant.
A brother.
A man Adrian had saved from poverty.
“Bring him to me.”
Sarah grabbed Adrian's arm.
“You just had surgery.”
Adrian looked at her.
“I know.”
“Don't go.”
He touched her cheek.
“I have to know who betrayed us.”
Then he stood.
