Chapter 20 - WHAT COMES NEXT The next morning, sunlight spilled through the mansion windows.

Harper stood in the kitchen making coffee.

Noah argued with Gabriel about pancakes.

For several minutes, nobody mentioned the photograph.

Nobody mentioned the past.

Nobody mentioned the danger.

Then Gabriel entered the kitchen.

Harper looked at him.

"You found something."

He nodded.

"Someone from my father's generation is still alive."

"Are they dangerous?"

Gabriel looked at her.

"Possibly."

"Are we in danger?"

He walked over and took her hand.

"Not today."

Harper smiled.

"Then today is enough."

Gabriel kissed her forehead.

Outside, Boston continued moving.

Cars crossed the bridge.

Ships entered the harbor.

People hurried down sidewalks, unaware that another chapter was quietly beginning inside the Ashford mansion.

Harper looked at the ring on her finger.

Once, she had hidden bruises in a bathroom mirror.

Now she stood in sunlight.

Loved.

Safe.

Free.

But somewhere across the city, a man opened an old photograph of Gabriel Ashford's father.

On the back was the same symbol.

And beneath it, one sentence:

HE THINKS THE PAST IS DEAD.

The man smiled.

Because it wasn't.

And when the phone rang, he answered only two words:

"Tell Gabriel..."

A pause.

"...I'm home."

The line went dead.

Across town, Gabriel suddenly looked toward the window.

Harper noticed.

"What is it?"

He turned back to her.

For a moment, she saw the old Gabriel—the man who had survived an entire lifetime by anticipating danger.

Then he smiled.

Not because he wasn't afraid.

Because this time, he had something to fight for.

He reached for Harper's hand.

Together, they walked toward the window.

Toward Boston.

Toward whatever waited beyond it.

Their story had found its happy ending.

May you like

But perhaps...

it had never really been the ending at all.
