Chapter 9 - THE SIEGE Glass exploded across the study.

Gabriel tackled Harper to the floor.
Another bullet tore through the chair where she had been standing.
Red emergency lights flooded the mansion.
Security shutters slammed down.
"Marcus!"
"Four shooters!"
Gabriel pulled Harper behind the stone column.
"Stay here."
"No."
"Harper."
"I'm not hiding."
He stared at her.
She was terrified.
But she was standing.
The same woman who had once hidden bruises under a uniform was now looking directly into gunfire.
Gabriel grabbed her hand.
"Then stay close."
They moved through the mansion.
Security teams engaged the attackers.
Harper used her nursing instincts to treat a wounded guard while Gabriel fought through the corridor.
Finally, silence.
Three attackers were captured.
One escaped.
Gabriel found Harper beside the injured guard.
He dropped to his knees.
"Are you hurt?"
She shook her head.
He pulled her into his arms.
His hands trembled.
She felt it.
The great Gabriel Ashford was afraid.
May you like
Not for himself.
For her.
