Chapter 6 - THE FIRST NIGHT WITHOUT FEAR Harper sat in Gabriel's study that evening.

Snow had begun falling over Beacon Hill.
She held a mug of coffee between trembling hands.
"Derek is gone?"
"Federal custody."
She closed her eyes.
Three years.
Three years of locked doors.
Apologies.
Lies.
Bruises hidden beneath sleeves.
Three years of waking at every sound.
And suddenly...
silence.
She began crying.
Gabriel didn't touch her.
He simply sat beside her.
After several minutes, Harper whispered:
"I don't know who I am without him."
Gabriel looked at her.
"Then find out."
She laughed through tears.
"You make everything sound easy."
"No."
He looked toward the window.
"I make it sound possible."
Harper turned toward him.
"What about you?"
"What about me?"
"Who are you without all this?"

Gabriel was silent.
For once, the most powerful man in the room had no answer.
