Chapter 8 - THE ENEMY IN THE HARBOR Viktor Vance controlled half the criminal network moving through Boston's waterfront.

He had waited years for Gabriel to show weakness.
Now he believed he had found it.
Gabriel stood in his study overlooking the harbor.
Black water.
Cold wind.
Distant ship horns.
Marcus entered.
"Vance knows Derek is gone."
Gabriel's jaw tightened.
"And?"
"He thinks the police network protecting you has collapsed."
Gabriel smiled without humor.
"Let him think that."
Harper entered carrying coffee.
She immediately noticed the tension.
"What's happening?"
"Nothing."
She set down the mug.
"You lie badly too."
Gabriel looked at her.
She crossed her arms.
"I'm not going to be locked away because your world is dangerous."
"This isn't your world."
"Then why am I standing in it?"
He had no answer.
Harper stepped closer.
"You saved me because you believed I deserved a choice."
She touched his chest.
"Don't take that choice away now."

Gabriel covered her hand with his.
Then the first gunshot shattered the night.
