Chapter 2 - The Camera in the Foyer The emergency room smelled like antiseptic, plastic, and fear.

Ethan sat beside Clara's hospital bed, staring at the small rise and fall of her chest.
The doctors had said she was lucky.
No broken bones.
A serious concussion.
Bruising along her arms and back.
A small cut.
Lucky.
Ethan hated the word.
There was nothing lucky about his daughter falling from a second floor.
Detective Mara Ellis arrived shortly after.
She didn't waste time.
“I need to show you something.”
The security footage played on a laptop.
Ethan watched.
Victoria approached Clara.
Clara stepped backward.
Victoria grabbed her.
And threw her.
There was no ambiguity.
No accident.
No loss of balance.
No misunderstanding.
Ethan closed his eyes.
Mara stopped the video.
“You don't have to watch again.”
He stared at the frozen image.
“My wife.”
Mara studied him.
“Tell me about Isabel.”
Ethan swallowed.
“She was admitted to a psychiatric facility four months ago.”
“Which one?”
“Cedar Haven.”
“Did you admit her?”
“No.”
“Who did?”
Ethan didn't answer.
He already knew.
His mother.
Mara slid a document across the table.
“This says you did.”
Ethan looked down.
His signature appeared at the bottom.
His stomach turned.
“I never signed this.”
The document stated that Ethan and Isabel were separated.
That Isabel posed a danger to herself and their daughter.
That Ethan wanted Victoria to act as temporary decision-maker.
There was another authorization.
Another signature.
Another document.
All apparently signed by him.
Except he had never seen any of them.
Mara asked quietly:
“Would your wife know if you had signed these?”
“Yes.”
“Then let's find out what she says.”
The first supervised video call lasted less than five minutes.
Isabel appeared on the screen.
Thinner.
Paler.
Exhausted.
Her eyes widened when she saw Ethan.
“Is Clara alive?”
Ethan's throat tightened.
“Yes.”
Isabel began crying.
“Victoria told me she was hurt because of me.”
“What?”
“She said Clara had an accident.”
Ethan stared at her.
“That happened today.”
Isabel froze.
“Today?”
“Yes.”
Something changed in her expression.
Fear became certainty.
“Ethan…”
“What?”
“She forged everything.”
The screen suddenly felt too small.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“I tried.”
Isabel's voice broke.
“They told me you didn't want to speak to me.”
“I never said that.”
“I know.”
She looked directly into the camera.
“She used fake messages. She made it look like I was threatening her. She made it look like I wanted to take Clara away.”
Ethan's hands curled into fists.
Then Isabel whispered:
“She wanted everyone to believe I was incapable of protecting my own daughter.”
The call ended.
Ethan remained staring at the black screen.
Mara's phone rang.
A forensic team had found a printer in Victoria's office.
Beside it was a shredder.
Inside were pieces of documents containing three words.
INCAPACITY.
ETHAN MILLER.
ISABEL MILLER.
Mara looked at Ethan.
“This wasn't an argument that got out of control.”
“No.”
“It looks planned.”
Ethan stared toward the hospital window.

For the first time, he wondered how long his mother had been planning to erase his wife.
And what she needed Isabel to lose before Clara turned eight.
