Chapter 9 - The Letter Robert Never Sent Samuel Reed found an old letter written by Robert Miller.
It had never been sent.
It was addressed to Victoria.
Robert had written:
A house is not proof that a family survived.
Ethan read the sentence three times.
Another line hurt even more.
If preserving the mansion requires sacrificing the purpose of the foundation, sell it.
Victoria had spent years doing the opposite.
Robert had also written:
I worry that you interpret people leaving as proof that you have failed them.
Ethan understood.
His mother had always been afraid of abandonment.
But instead of accepting that fear, she had built systems to prevent anyone from leaving.
She had controlled.
Then controlled harder.
Until control became violence.
Ethan visited her under legal supervision.
“Did you throw Clara?”
Victoria looked down.
“Yes.”
“Was it an accident?”
“No.”
“Did you forge my signature?”
“Yes.”
“Did you create the fake emails?”
“Yes.”
“Did you know Isabel could be confined?”
Victoria hesitated.
“I wanted her evaluated.”
“For four months?”
Silence.
Ethan placed Robert's letter on the table.
Victoria read it.
When she reached the final paragraph, tears filled her eyes.
She whispered:
“He would have sold the house.”
“Yes.”
She looked at her son.
“I was trying to save everything.”
Ethan stood.
“No.”
Victoria looked up.

And he walked away.
