Chapter 6 - What Clara Said When She Was Afraid The child interview revealed something even darker.
Victoria had coached Clara.
Not once.
Repeatedly.
“If they ask whether Mommy gets angry, say yes.”
“But Mommy sings.”
“That doesn't matter.”
“What about Dad?”
“Your father is busy.”
Victoria had taught Clara which memories mattered.
Which ones didn't.
Which words would make adults afraid.
Then she told Clara:
“If you don't help, Mommy may never get better.”
Clara believed her.
That was the tragedy.
Children don't understand manipulation the way adults do.
They understand consequences.
They understand fear.
They understand when someone powerful tells them that the safety of the family depends on them.
When Clara found the folder containing a statement she had never made, something inside her broke.
The statement said:
Clara does not want to live with her mother.
She had never said it.
She confronted Victoria.
And Victoria lost control.
The staircase became the final explosion of months of manipulation.
But there was still one question.
Why had Victoria been so desperate?
The answer came from an old email.
She didn't want Isabel declared incapable forever.
She only needed it to happen before Clara's eighth birthday.
After that, the trust would change.
