The financial records showed no cartoon villainy.
They showed something more dangerous.
Justifications.
Every questionable transfer had a reason.
Every lie had an explanation.
Every violation had been temporary.
Until years passed.
Then Isabel found an audio recording.
Victoria's voice:
“If you force Ethan to choose between you and this family, you'll discover I've already chosen for him.”
Another voice answered.
Gregory Lane.
Victoria's attorney.
“This isn't about the foundation anymore.”
Victoria replied:
“It will be if she becomes the protector.”
The recording ended.
Ethan listened twice.
The first time, he was angry.
The second time, he understood.
