Chapter 1 - THE NANNY’S WARNING “DON’T GIVE HER THE BABY! SHE’S BEEN WAITING FOR YOU TO DO EXACTLY THAT!”

“DON’T GIVE HER THE BABY! SHE’S BEEN WAITING FOR YOU TO DO EXACTLY THAT!”

The nanny’s scream cut through the wood-paneled study like shattered glass. Daniel froze with his infant daughter pressed against his chest. Across the room, Vanessa stood perfectly still in her red dress. Only seconds earlier, she had been shouting. Now her face had become frighteningly calm.

“What are you talking about?” Daniel demanded. His voice was low, but something dangerous had entered it. The nanny, Elena, held one trembling hand against her cheek. She looked terrified of Vanessa, yet even more terrified of remaining silent. Her eyes dropped toward the baby. “Sir, what happened today wasn’t an accident.”

Vanessa laughed once, coldly. “You’re listening to a woman who nearly dropped your daughter.” She stepped closer. Daniel instinctively moved backward. That tiny movement changed everything. Vanessa noticed it. Elena noticed it. Even Daniel seemed surprised by his own reaction. For the first time, his body had chosen suspicion before his heart could stop it.

“Then explain this.” Elena reached inside the pocket of her uniform and pulled out a tiny silver key. Vanessa’s expression changed instantly. It lasted less than a second, but Daniel saw it. Fear. Real fear. Elena placed the key on the desk. “I found this underneath the crib three nights ago.”

Daniel stared at it. “What does it open?” Elena swallowed. Vanessa moved toward the desk, but Daniel blocked her path with one arm. Elena whispered, “The locked room at the end of the west hallway.” Daniel’s eyes narrowed. That room had belonged to his late wife, Rebecca. Nobody had entered it since her death.

“You’re lying,” Vanessa snapped. But Elena shook her head. “I opened it this morning.” Daniel felt his daughter stir against him as though sensing the tension. “What did you find?” he asked. Elena’s lips trembled. “Photographs. Medical documents. And a security monitor showing this room.”

Silence swallowed the study. Daniel slowly looked toward the ceiling. Hidden beside the decorative molding was something he had never noticed before—a pin-sized black lens. Vanessa suddenly lunged for the silver key. Daniel caught her wrist. “Don’t,” he said. Vanessa stared into his eyes. “You have no idea what you’re protecting.”

Daniel released her slowly. “Then tell me.” Vanessa said nothing. Elena stepped closer and whispered the sentence that changed the night. “She wasn’t watching the baby, Mr. Hayes.” Her eyes moved toward Vanessa. “She was watching you.”
