Chapter 4 - THE BROTHER BEHIND THE DOOR“MICHAEL, STEP AWAY FROM THE DOOR OR I SWEAR I’LL CALL THE POLICE.”

Daniel’s voice echoed into the darkness. No answer came. His daughter began whimpering against his chest. Elena gently took the baby while Daniel reached for his phone. No signal. Vanessa checked hers. Nothing. Whoever had entered the mansion had disabled the internal network.
Then Michael spoke softly through the door. “Rebecca lied to you.” Daniel’s hand tightened into a fist. “Then tell me why you were at that clinic.” Silence followed. Finally Michael answered, “Because Rebecca asked me to go.” Vanessa shook her head immediately. “That isn’t what happened.”
Michael laughed bitterly. “Of course Vanessa says that. Ask her why she changed her last name.” Daniel turned toward Vanessa. The question hung between them. Vanessa finally whispered, “Because Cole was my mother’s name.” Michael spoke again. “Tell him the rest.”
Vanessa looked at Daniel. “My father owned the clinic.” Daniel felt another piece fall into place. Vanessa had not entered his life accidentally. She had been connected to Rebecca long before their engagement. Every dinner, every kiss, every promise suddenly seemed contaminated by questions.
“Were you using me?” Daniel asked. Vanessa’s face broke. “At first, I came here because Rebecca made me promise I would find out who killed her.” Daniel recoiled. Vanessa continued quickly, “But I never expected to love you. And I never expected your daughter to become part of this.”
From behind the door, Michael said, “Beautiful story.” Then came a metallic click. Daniel recognized the sound instantly. The lock was being manipulated from outside. Elena grabbed the baby and moved behind the bed. Vanessa pulled a heavy lamp from the table. Daniel stood beside the doorway.
The lock opened. Michael stepped inside—but he was alone, his hands raised. Blood stained the shoulder of his shirt. “Close the door,” he whispered. Daniel stared at the wound. Michael collapsed against the wall. “Those men aren’t with me.” Vanessa lowered the lamp slightly.
Michael looked toward the monitor. “They’re here for Rebecca’s original evidence.” Daniel grabbed his brother by the collar. “Did you kill her?” Michael looked directly into Daniel’s eyes. “No.” Daniel tightened his grip. “Did you betray her?” Michael hesitated.
That hesitation was enough. Daniel shoved him against the wall. Michael grimaced. “I gave someone her location the night she died.” Elena gasped. Vanessa stared at him with pure fury. Daniel’s face went blank. “Who?” Michael’s eyes moved toward the baby.
Before he could answer, Rebecca’s recording resumed automatically. Her voice filled the dark room. “If Michael is with you, don’t hurt him. He made a terrible mistake, but he isn’t the person you should fear.” Daniel slowly released his brother.
Rebecca leaned closer to the camera.

“The person you should fear is the one who has been living under your roof.”
Everyone turned toward Elena.
