Chapter 5 - THE LAST NAME ON THE RECORDING“NO—DON’T LOOK AT ME LIKE THAT. I’M THE REASON YOUR DAUGHTER IS STILL ALIVE!”

Elena backed toward the crib, clutching the baby protectively. Daniel’s shock became rage. Vanessa raised the lamp again. Michael struggled to his feet. Rebecca’s recording continued, but static swallowed several seconds of her next sentence.
“Elena,” Daniel whispered, “give me my daughter.” Tears filled the nanny’s eyes. “I will. But first you need to understand why Rebecca hired me.” Daniel froze. Elena slowly handed the child to him. Then she removed the gold name badge from her uniform and placed it on the desk.
“My name isn’t Elena Torres.” Michael stared at her. Vanessa suddenly understood. “You were at the clinic.” Elena nodded. “I was a pediatric nurse there.” She looked at Daniel. “Rebecca discovered babies’ identities were being altered for wealthy clients. She asked me to copy the records.”
Daniel held his daughter tighter. “Was my daughter switched?” Elena shook her head. “No. Rebecca stopped it.” Relief barely had time to enter Daniel’s face before Elena continued. “But somebody wanted you to believe she had been switched. They needed you doubting everyone around you.”
Rebecca’s voice returned clearly from the monitor. “Elena is protecting our daughter. Trust her.” Daniel closed his eyes briefly. He had nearly accused the one person Rebecca herself had trusted. Vanessa lowered the lamp. Michael slid to the floor, weakened by blood loss.
Then Rebecca revealed the final piece. “The clinic was never about children. The altered records were a cover for moving money through fake medical accounts. Someone close to Daniel built the entire system.” She lifted another document. At the bottom was a signature.
Daniel moved closer to the monitor. The signature was partially hidden beneath Rebecca’s thumb. Downstairs, glass shattered. The intruders had entered the west wing. Vanessa rushed to the cabinet and removed the hard drive. “We have maybe two minutes.”
Michael pointed toward the bookshelf. “There’s a service staircase behind it.” Daniel stared at him. “How do you know?” Michael gave him a broken smile. “Because Rebecca showed me the night I betrayed her.” Daniel wanted answers, but footsteps were already approaching.
They pushed the shelf aside and discovered a narrow staircase descending into darkness. Elena went first. Vanessa followed. Michael stumbled behind them. Daniel remained for one final second, staring at Rebecca’s frozen face on the monitor while his daughter slept against his chest.
Then the video unexpectedly advanced.
Rebecca moved her thumb away from the document.
Daniel saw the signature.
His entire body went still.
It wasn’t Michael’s.
It wasn’t Vanessa’s.
It wasn’t Elena’s.
It belonged to Daniel’s father—Charles Hayes, the billionaire patriarch who had supposedly died twelve years earlier.
Behind Daniel, Vanessa whispered, “Daniel… we have to go.”
But Daniel couldn’t move.
Because downstairs, through the mansion’s darkness, an elderly man’s voice suddenly called his name.
“Daniel?”
He knew that voice.

He had heard it throughout his entire childhood.
And the man who was supposed to be dead had just walked back into his house.
