Chapter 8 - THE PATRIARCH'S TRAP

The heavy iron door swung outward, groaning violently against its rusted hinges as the group spilled into the cavernous underground parking garage. Searing halogen floodlights instantly blinded them, pinning them down like terrified insects under a cruel, unforgiving microscope. Standing perfectly still in the center of the concrete floor was Charles Hayes, flanked by six armed men leveling automatic rifles.
"You have your mother's eyes, but you inherited my pathetic sentimentality," Charles sneered, stepping out of the blinding, oppressive glare. He looked significantly older, his face heavily scarred from the plane crash that supposedly killed him, leaning on a silver-tipped cane. The dead billionaire stared at the infant in Elena’s arms with a terrifying, predatory hunger making Daniel’s stomach churn.
"Let them walk away right now, Charles," Daniel demanded, stepping directly into the line of fire to shield the women and his child. He absolutely refused to call this monster his father. "You have the mansion, you have your shadow empire, just let us leave." Charles laughed, a dry, hollow sound echoing harshly against the cold concrete garage walls.

"I don't care about the empire anymore, Daniel. I only care about legacy," the old man stated, his tone dropping to a highly dangerous whisper. "My bloodline requires a pure heir, raised by me, untainted by your weakness or Rebecca’s pathetic morality." He pointed the silver cane directly at the baby. "Give me the child and the hard drive. Now."
Suddenly, Michael staggered out from the shadows of the doorway, holding a live fragmentation grenade he had taken from an unconscious guard upstairs. He pulled the metal pin with his teeth, thick blood pouring from his lips as he smiled at the billionaire. "Hey, old man," Michael rasped, his voice completely broken. "Consider this my absolute final resignation from your company."
