Chapter 9 - THE FIRE OF REDEMPTION
"Get down!" Vanessa screamed, fiercely tackling Daniel and Elena behind the reinforced steel chassis of a parked black armored SUV. Michael charged the armed mercenaries with zero hesitation, absorbing a terrifying barrage of gunfire as he threw himself directly at Charles. The resulting massive explosion violently shook the foundation of the garage, throwing the mercenaries through the air in shockwaves.
Thick, acrid smoke instantly filled the subterranean cavern, plunging the highly chaotic standoff into total, blinding, and terrifying confusion. The automatic sprinklers roared to life, raining freezing water down upon the concrete as the surviving guards scrambled frantically to find their primary targets. Vanessa didn't waste a single second, raising her pistol and ruthlessly eliminating two completely disoriented gunmen immediately.
"In the car, right now!" Daniel roared, pulling open the heavy door of the SUV while laying down suppressive fire with a dropped rifle. Elena scrambled hastily into the backseat, curling her body entirely around the screaming infant to completely shield her from flying shrapnel. Bullets sparked highly dangerously against the bulletproof windows, leaving spiderweb cracks across the reinforced glass.

Vanessa jumped into the driver’s seat, slamming the transmission into reverse and flooring the accelerator with brutal, terrifying, and unstoppable force. The massive vehicle surged backward, violently crushing a mercenary against a concrete pillar before spinning wildly toward the heavily fortified garage exit. Through the dissipating smoke, Daniel saw his father, bleeding but very much alive, screaming furious orders aloud.
The heavy SUV’s tires screamed in violent protest as Vanessa fiercely rammed right through the reinforced iron security gates, launching them outside. They tore down the winding mountain road, leaving the burning mansion and the deadly ghosts of Daniel’s past far behind them in the rearview mirror. For a completely breathless moment, the only sound was the baby’s frightened crying.
