Chapter 2 - THE ROOM THAT SHOULD HAVE STAYED LOCKED “IF THAT DOOR OPENS, YOU’LL NEVER LOOK AT YOUR FAMILY THE SAME WAY AGAIN.”

“IF THAT DOOR OPENS, YOU’LL NEVER LOOK AT YOUR FAMILY THE SAME WAY AGAIN.”

Vanessa’s warning followed Daniel down the west hallway. He carried his daughter in one arm and the silver key in the other. Elena walked several steps behind him. Vanessa followed them, no longer shouting. Her silence somehow felt more threatening than her anger.
The hallway ended beneath a portrait of Daniel’s late wife. Rebecca’s painted eyes seemed to follow him as he inserted the key. For three years, Daniel had treated this room like a tomb. He had believed leaving it untouched was an act of love. Now the lock clicked, and that belief began to collapse.
The room smelled of dust and lavender. Rebecca’s books remained on the shelves. Her cream-colored chair still faced the window. But behind it stood something that had never belonged there: a metal cabinet filled with monitors. Six camera feeds displayed different rooms throughout the mansion. One showed the nursery. Another showed Daniel’s office.
“What the hell is this?” Daniel whispered. Elena approached a desk covered with folders. Vanessa remained near the doorway. “Ask your wife,” she said. Daniel turned sharply. “Rebecca has been dead for three years.” Vanessa’s face hardened. “Exactly.” Daniel stared at her, waiting. Then Elena found something beneath a stack of medical records.
It was a photograph. Rebecca stood beside another woman outside a private clinic. Daniel recognized the woman immediately. Vanessa. The photograph had been taken five years earlier—two years before Rebecca died and long before Vanessa had supposedly met Daniel. His fingers tightened around the photograph. “You knew my wife.”
Vanessa looked away. Daniel’s voice exploded. “YOU KNEW HER!” The baby began crying. Daniel immediately lowered his voice and rocked her gently. Vanessa watched him with an expression he could not understand. Guilt was there. Fear was there. But beneath both was something almost resembling grief.
“She contacted me first,” Vanessa finally said. “Rebecca believed somebody inside this house was trying to destroy your family.” Daniel shook his head. “Why you?” Vanessa answered quietly, “Because I was investigating the clinic where your daughter was born.” Elena stopped breathing for a moment. Daniel stared at Vanessa.
Vanessa approached the monitors. “Rebecca discovered somebody had been altering medical records. Birth records. DNA reports. Medication schedules.” Daniel felt the floor disappear beneath him. He looked at the sleeping child in his arms. “What are you saying?” Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears, but her answer never came.

One monitor suddenly flickered. The recorded feeds disappeared. A live image replaced them. It showed the mansion’s front gate. A black SUV had stopped outside. Three men stepped out. Elena whispered, “Who are they?” Vanessa went pale. “The reason Rebecca installed those cameras.” Then the front door alarm chimed downstairs.
Someone had entered the house.
