Chapter 3 - THE MAN IN REBECCA’S RECORDING“TURN OFF THE LIGHTS. IF HE SEES THE BABY, WE’RE ALREADY TOO LATE.”

Vanessa locked the bedroom door and killed the lights. Daniel stared at her. “Who is downstairs?” She ignored the question and pulled open the metal cabinet. Behind the monitors was a hidden compartment containing a small hard drive and a white envelope bearing Daniel’s name.
The handwriting belonged to Rebecca. Daniel recognized every curve immediately. His hands shook as he opened it. Inside was a memory card and four words written in black ink: IF I DIE, WATCH THIS. For the first time since Rebecca’s funeral, Daniel felt grief transform into something colder.
Elena inserted the card into the monitor. Rebecca appeared on-screen. She looked exhausted, frightened, and unmistakably alive. The timestamp showed the recording had been made six days before her death. Daniel covered his mouth. Rebecca looked directly into the camera. “Daniel, if you’re seeing this, I failed.”
Rebecca explained that someone had been secretly monitoring Daniel’s financial accounts, medical appointments, and family records. She had discovered irregular payments connected to the private clinic. When she confronted the clinic administrator, he disappeared. Two days later, Rebecca began receiving photographs of herself carrying their newborn daughter.
Then Rebecca said something that made Vanessa close her eyes. “There is one person I trust with the evidence. Her name is Vanessa Cole.” Daniel turned slowly. “Cole?” Vanessa said nothing. On-screen, Rebecca continued. “She isn’t who Daniel thinks she is. But if she’s still alive, she may be the only person who can protect him.”
Footsteps sounded in the hallway. Everyone froze. Daniel moved instinctively toward the door. Vanessa grabbed his arm. “No.” Daniel pulled away. “That’s my house.” Vanessa whispered, “And Rebecca died believing someone inside it betrayed her. Think before you open that door.”
The handle moved. Once. Twice. Then stopped. A man’s voice came from the other side. “Daniel? It’s Michael.” Daniel’s face changed. Michael was his older brother. His closest friend. The man who had stood beside Rebecca’s grave and held Daniel upright during the funeral.
Daniel reached for the lock. Vanessa blocked him. “Look at the recording.” Rebecca was still speaking. “Daniel, the person responsible knows everything about you because you trust him completely.” She lifted a photograph toward the camera. Daniel could not yet see the face clearly.
Outside, Michael knocked harder. “Open the door. Vanessa is dangerous!” Daniel stepped toward the screen. Rebecca moved the photograph closer to the lens. The image sharpened. Daniel stopped breathing. It showed Michael leaving the clinic with the administrator who had supposedly disappeared.

Then Michael stopped knocking.
A second later, the lights throughout the mansion went out.
