Chapter 6 - THE GHOST IN THE HALLWAY

"Put the weapon down, son, we have so much catching up to do." The voice echoing up the grand staircase belonged to a ghost, a dead billionaire who supposedly burned in an aviation crash twelve years ago. Daniel’s blood turned to absolute ice. The impossible reality of his father’s chillingly calm tone paralyzed him completely in the shattered bedroom doorway.

Vanessa grabbed Daniel by the collar, violently dragging him backward into the suffocating darkness of the hidden service staircase. He clutched his sleeping infant daughter to his chest, his mind frantically rejecting what his ears had just heard. Heavy, militarized boots immediately kicked the bedroom doors open, shattering the heavy oak frames seconds after the hidden bookshelf slid firmly shut.

They plunged into the pitch-black descent, guided only by the desperate, ragged sound of Michael’s bleeding breaths ahead of them. Dust choked the stagnant air, thick with the forgotten secrets of a mansion Daniel only thought he knew. Below them, through the thin plaster walls, the phantom voice of Charles Hayes coldly instructed his armed mercenaries to tear everything apart.

"Find the stolen drive, and bring me my precious granddaughter," the dead patriarch commanded, his tone completely devoid of any grandfatherly warmth. It was a sterile, calculating order, the voice of a man who viewed human beings merely as assets to be acquired. Daniel tightened his protective grip on the baby, feeling a lethal, unfamiliar rage beginning to replace shock.

Elena reached back in the oppressive gloom, her hand finding Daniel’s shoulder to steady his descent on the treacherous wooden stairs. "He never died, Daniel," she whispered, her voice trembling but incredibly fierce. "Rebecca found out he faked his demise to operate entirely off the grid. He needed a ghost's absolute anonymity to build the bloodiest financial empire ever known."
