Chapter 18 - The Anniversary On the anniversary of the incident, Eleanor gave Olivia another letter.

Olivia opened it privately.

The letter contained no excuses.

Eleanor wrote that she couldn't change the day she had hurt her granddaughter.

She couldn't erase Olivia's fear.

She couldn't pretend it had never happened.

But she hoped Olivia remembered something else too.

That people could change.

That apologies mattered only when followed by action.

That strength didn't mean never being afraid.

And that asking for help was not weakness.

Olivia folded the letter carefully.

She found Eleanor outside.

“You wrote this?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because some things are easier to say on paper.”

Olivia sat beside her.

“I remember that day.”

Eleanor lowered her eyes.

“I know.”

“But I don't only remember that day.”

Eleanor looked up.

Olivia smiled.

“I remember the cookies.”

Eleanor laughed through tears.

“The frosting was terrible.”

“It was.”

“I remember the puzzle.”

“You put the wrong piece in.”

“You told me maybe it belonged there.”

“It didn't.”

They both laughed.

The past remained.

But it no longer owned them.
