So did Caroline Mason.
According to medical systems, Caroline was paranoid.
Delusional.
Unstable.
If Claire said, "I'm Claire Carter," the record would answer:
Patient displays persistent false identity beliefs.
It was elegant in its cruelty.
Marcus hadn't simply imprisoned her.
He had created documentation capable of turning the truth into evidence of insanity.
Claire stared at the records.
"What if I can't erase this?"
Daniel wanted to promise her everything would be okay.
He didn't.
He had learned that false reassurance could be another kind of dishonesty.
"We fight it."
Lawyers began the process.
DNA.
Court orders.
Hospital records.
Witness testimony.
It took months.
During that time, Claire lived with Daniel.
Sometimes she woke at three in the morning and checked windows.
Daniel never told her to stop.
He simply left the hallway light on.
Lily adored her.
Noah rediscovered the aunt he thought he had lost.
Eventually, the court ruled.
CAROLINE MASON: FRAUDULENT IDENTITY CREATED WITHOUT CONSENT.
CLAIRE MARIE CARTER: IDENTITY LEGALLY CONFIRMED.
Claire read the paper.
Then folded it.
"That's it?"
Her attorney smiled.
"That's it."
Claire went to the DMV.
Waited forty-five minutes.
Hated her photograph.
Complained about bureaucracy.
Daniel almost cried watching her complain.
Because ordinary frustration meant ordinary life.
Marcus's criminal trial began shortly afterward.
Claire testified.
Marcus claimed he believed she required treatment.
Then under cross-examination, he made the mistake that destroyed him.
"Claire was dangerous to the company."
The prosecutor asked:
"Is that a medical diagnosis?"
Marcus said nothing.
"You imprisoned a woman because she threatened your business interests, didn't you?"
Marcus lowered his eyes.
The jury understood.
The convictions came.
Kidnapping.
Fraud.
Identity falsification.
Illegal medical treatment.
Conspiracy.
Evidence manipulation.
Additional charges connected to Gregory's death.
Marcus lost everything.
But before Vanessa's sentencing, she asked to speak with Claire.
She revealed something darker.
