Chapter 17 - ROOM 214 North Pines looked smaller.

That surprised Claire.

In her nightmares, the hallways stretched forever.

In reality, they were narrow.

Paint peeled from the walls.

Fluorescent fixtures hung dark from the ceiling.

Room 214 waited at the end of one corridor.

Claire stopped.

Rachel didn't touch her.

Didn't tell her to be brave.

Didn't enter first.

She simply waited.

Claire stepped inside.

A bed frame.

A desk.

A small window.

"This is where they told me Daniel didn't want me."

Rachel's eyes filled.

Claire touched the wall.

"And this is where I stopped believing them."

That mattered.

The room wasn't only where they broke her down.

It was where she resisted.

She found faint letters scratched beneath layers of paint.

C.

C.

C.

Maybe she had written them.

Maybe another patient had.

She didn't need to know.

Claire left empty-handed.

The building was demolished the following week.

She watched thirty seconds of video.

Then closed it.

No triumph.

No tears.

Just an ending.

Years rolled forward.

Noah married.

Lily became an attorney.

Daniel grew gray.

Claire's hair became silver.

Rachel teased her.

Then Lily married.

Daniel walked beside her because she asked him to.

At the ceremony, Lily said:

"I grew up learning that trust doesn't mean refusing to verify, and love doesn't mean hiding the truth."

Daniel cried.

Of course he did.

Later, Claire stood beside him.

"You cry at everything now."

"I'm old."

"You were always dramatic."

Daniel looked at his sister.

There had been a time he believed he would never see her again.

Now they were arguing at his daughter's wedding.

He would take that miracle.

Every time.
