Chapter 13 - THIS TIME, GOODBYE WAS REAL No guards.

No police.

No hidden ambulance.

Just luggage.

Noah hugged Claire.

Lily demanded:

"Aunt Claire come tomorrow."

"Not tomorrow."

Lily frowned.

"Bad."

Claire laughed.

At security, she looked back at Daniel.

"I'm not going to text you from London."

He laughed.

"You're horrible."

"I'll video call tonight."

"Okay."

Claire walked away.

For sixty seconds, Daniel couldn't breathe properly.

Then he reminded himself.

Leaving wasn't disappearing.

Distance wasn't death.

Silence wasn't automatically conspiracy.

Claire called that night.

Seattle skyline behind her.

Noah showed her his piano practice.

Lily screamed into the camera.

Life continued.

Claire built a career in institutional ethics.

Not as "the woman Marcus kidnapped."

As Claire.

Years passed.

Noah grew.

Lily learned about Emma.

Daniel dated carefully.

Claire eventually returned for Lily's birthday with someone beside her.

Rachel Morgan.

Claire looked nervous when she introduced her.

Daniel blinked once.

Then smiled.

"Rachel, welcome to the family."

Claire's face softened.

That was enough.

Then a letter came from prison.

Marcus requested restorative contact.

Claire stared at the envelope.

Rachel asked:

"Are you going to read it?"

Claire thought about thirteen stolen months.

Then shook her head.

"No."

She placed it in the trash.

May you like

Marcus had taken enough of her time.

He wasn't getting another minute.
