Then pushed it away.
"I don't want it."
Daniel looked at her.
"It's yours."
"I didn't say it wasn't mine."
She leaned back.
"I said I don't want it."
Gregory's accompanying letter explained why.
Claire had been cautious.
Independent.
Suspicious of concentrated power.
Daniel had been brilliant—but too willing to trust confident men.
Daniel almost laughed.
"Our dead father is insulting me."
Claire smiled.
"He's not wrong."
That hurt because it was true.
Marcus and Samuel had hidden the document because Claire was difficult to manipulate.
Daniel wasn't stupid.
But grief had made him vulnerable.
Vanessa had entered at the exact moment he needed help most.
Samuel had provided certainty.
Marcus had provided authority.
Together, they built an environment where Daniel rarely questioned anything.
Claire refused the old model.
No single Carter would control the company again.
Independent auditors.
Shared governance.
External board oversight.
Daniel agreed.
Then Vanessa faced sentencing.
She admitted what she could no longer deny.
"I lost control."
Claire read the transcript.
"People always say that like control is something that falls out of your pocket."
Vanessa had chosen.
She had forged messages.
Moved Claire.
Helped transfer money.
Hidden evidence.
And attacked Lily.
She had also been manipulated by Marcus.
Both things could be true.
Victim.
Accomplice.
The court would judge actions, not mythology.
At home, Noah began therapy.
His therapist told him:
"What you did for Lily was brave."
Noah looked at Daniel.
"But I don't have to protect her all the time?"
Daniel answered first.
"No."
Then corrected himself.
"Safe adults protect you both. And you can always ask for help."
Noah nodded.
One afternoon, Lily wandered into Daniel's study.
He froze.
That room meant hidden phones.
Fraud.
Black folders.
Death certificates.
Lily picked up a yellow pencil.
Nothing happened.
Claire stood in the doorway.
"You need therapy too."
Daniel exhaled.
"Thanks."
"I'm serious."
For once, Daniel listened.
Then Samuel provided another revelation.
Marcus had created psychiatric records designed to destroy Claire if she ever returned.
