Chapter 12 - THE LIFE CLAIRE CHOSE Claire rented a small apartment overlooking a river.

Daniel hated the idea.
"Security?"
"Two locks and an alarm."
"That's not enough."
Claire raised an eyebrow.
"I'm not going to spend the rest of my life living like a hostage because I used to be one."
Daniel had no answer.
She started specialized trauma therapy.
She slept badly.
Then better.
She cooked.
Ran.
Worked.
Bought furniture without wondering whether somebody would search it.
One day, Lily called her:
"Aunt Claire."
Claire froze.
Daniel smiled.
"You've officially been promoted."
Claire cried.
For thirteen months, paperwork had said she wasn't Claire.
Now a little girl said her name without hesitation.
That mattered more.
Daniel sold the old mansion.
Noah approved.
"I don't want the house with the ghost phone."
Daniel laughed despite himself.
They moved into something smaller.
No grand antiques.
No inherited weapons.
No rooms designed to impress board members.
Just home.
During the move, they discovered old recordings made by Gregory.
On one tape, Daniel was seven.
Claire was nine.
Gregory asked:
"What will you do when you're grown up?"
Young Daniel shouted:
"I'm going to run the company!"
Claire replied:
"I'm going to stop him from doing stupid things."
The adult siblings laughed until they cried.
Then another recording appeared.
Gregory, alone.
Older.
Tired.
"If you're watching this, remember something. Family is not the company."
Daniel turned off the tape.
"He knew."
Claire nodded.
"Maybe too late."
That summer, Claire received a job offer.
Seattle.
Thousands of miles away.
Daniel's immediate reaction was panic.
Claire saw it.
"I'm not disappearing."
"I know."
"I'll call."
"I know."
"You don't believe your own body yet."
Daniel looked away.
She was right.
He knew logically that leaving was not abandonment.
His nervous system didn't.
But the day came.
Daniel drove her to the airport.

This time, Claire was leaving because she chose to.
And Daniel had to learn that love sometimes meant letting someone walk away.
